You’ve Tried CBD, But What About CBD For Your Pet?

As more humans are experiencing the benefits of CBD in their health and well-being, the benefits are now being passed on to our furry friends as more pet-owners administer CBD to their four-legged friends.

A senior Stafford Terrier had a fast-growing tumor in her mammary gland, with chest X-Rays indicating there may be a metastasis. Holistic veterinarian Dr. Edward Bassingthwaighte utilized CBD oil and saw that the tumor completely shrank over three months. His furry friend is still tumor-free six months later.

An old Jack Russell with a severe heart murmur and painful arthritis received a wide spectrum extract containing CBD diluted in 10 ml of cold-pressed hemp seed oil. After a month of the CBD oil’s administration he had more energy, was happier, and his heart murmur was much less severe. Dr. Bassingthwaighte says, “I simply can’t explain the improved heart murmur. They normally don’t get better.”

CBD is becoming a widely utilized method for managing pain, inflammation, anxiety, cancer, seizures, and other ailments, in humans, and its use in mammalian pets seems promising. As with the human body, all mammals possess an endocannabinoid system that can become imbalanced if there are not enough endogenous (natural) cannabinoids being produced. When cannabinoids, such as CBD, are taken into the body they act on receptors in the endocannabinoid system and restore balance to different systems.

CBD can come in many forms including oils, tinctures, and edible treats and many companies have introduced animal-specific product lines geared towards CBD use for pets.

What Are the Benefits Of Cannabis Oil For Pets?

CBD can be used to support several health-related issues in mammals. It has been shown to support the reduction of nausea, stress, anxiety, arthritis, symptoms of cancer, seizures, and gastrointestinal issues.

Unlike some traditional medicines given to animals, CBD infused products will not damage the kidney, liver or GI tract. The animals will not be sedated, and many owners often see an improvement in the animal’s energy levels.

To administer CBD products, most owners will give the CBD oil orally, whether it be directly given or hidden in food. Once absorbed, the CBD acts on endocannabinoid receptors, and the effects are fairly immediate.

It is extremely important to properly dose an animal’s CBD oil. Dr. Bassingthwaighte suggests working with a holistic vet to determine if CBD is going to benefit an animal – it’s powerful medicine so get your veterinarian on board with what you are doing.

What to Be Aware Of

Pure CBD products, that contain less than .3% THC, are generally safe for animals, however, CBD products that contain THC may be fatal when given in high doses. It is crucial to ensure that CBD products given to pets are produced from hemp and do not contain THC.

One of the biggest problems faced when providing pets with CBD is that there is a lack of research as to the proper dosing of animals. Therefore, great care should be taken when medicating a pet. Pet owners should begin by administering a small dose of CBD and observe the effects on the animal.

There is currently one study being conducted by Dr. Huntingford, in Essex, which is looking at the effects of CBD oil in dogs. The trial is researching the effects of CBD oil on dogs with diagnosed arthritis in one limb. This double-blind trial administers CBD oil to half of the participants while the other half are administered a placebo. Preliminary results of the study has demonstrated significant positive outcomes with CBD , although the research is still 64 more trials away from the treatment being approved for use. Should the product finish its trials and be approved, it will be available for veterinarians to prescribe to their patients in the United States.

Finding the Right CBD Products for Pets

CBD products for pets are finding their way onto retail shelves, with some CBD brands choosing to focus wholly on pet CBD. Some of the most reputable and quality-driven brands include King Kanine, HolistaPet, Hemp My Pet, and Honest Paws. While King Kanine is geared towards dogs only, the rest of the brands cater to both cats and dogs.

All CBD products currently being sold in the United States are derived from hemp and contain less than .3% THC, making them safe for use in animals. Animal specific lines of CBD oil are typically 70-100mg per bottle, with a recommended dosage of 5-15 drops per day. CBD oil can be mixed with food or given orally to animals with very few side effects.
